ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Shot at The Golden Temple, Amritsar - Punjab; India 2017
The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the chief gurdwara (house of worship) of Sikhism and the Sikhs’ most important pilgrimage site. The temple itself occupies a small island in the centre of a sacred lake like tank, called the Amrita Saras or Amritsar Sarovar (“Pool of Nectar”) from which the city draws it’s name. The sarovar was initiated in the 16th century by Guru Ram Das and was designed to symbolise the concept of equality, compassion, unity, and purity in Sikhism and as such the complex welcomes people of all castes and creeds to worship and reflect in it’s sacred space.
I spent a two days from morning through to evening in the temple complex volunteering with the men & women collecting the shoes of everyone who enters and in the largest free kitchen in the world (serving free meals to over 100,000 people a day) and watching the tens of thousands of pilgrims, tourists and worshippers flow through. The atmosphere around the Amrit Seras is one ripe with spirituality, devotion, and a sense of community which transcends racial and religious bounds. It serves as a place of solace, reflection for all as well as religious observances fro those of the Sikh faith.
I captured this image on my last evening at the temple at dusk in a deeply reflective personal moment sat on the edge of this sacred body of water. The serene, dreamlike scene and literal relections on the amrit seras an embodiment of my inner space after my time spent amongst the selfless service, compassion and deep devotion within this sacred space.
