Sattipattana
Limited Editon Fine Art Print. Numbered and signed.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Shot in the Lamayuru in Ladakh - in the mountain state of Jammu and Kashmir in India.
Captured whilst walking on the rocky mounatin face behind Lama yuru Gompa, towards the adjoining monastery and the monks isolated meditation huts. I had walked up to gain an elevated perspective over the gompa (temple) itself. An extremely striking and ancient construction juxtaposed against ring aftre ring of tortured rocks of deep purples, pale yellow and blue greys - it is too high for trees and other vegetation at this altitude so it is just rock as far as the eye can see. The landscape is otherworldly, unforgiving and austere but also overwhelmingly beautiful hence it’s nickname of moonland.
As I was climbing I looked around to see these two very young monks skipping and dancing on the cliff edge from the monastery down towards the living quarters. They were completely present, focused on the moment and absolutely without fear. It felt a very vivid reminder of the buddhist concept of Sattipattana (a Pali word, roughly translated as ‘‘presence in mindfulness’ and one of Buddha’s principle teachings.
